While Tod lures him away, the officers strenuously try to free themselves before he can come back. While not strong, his nimbleness motivates the criminal to go after him first and ensure there'll be no witnesses. Then, Tod shows up as a distraction and wrestles the bear. They get stuck in their own traps and lose hold of their most effective weapons, and Copper is unable to protect his father from the psychopath. They are no match for him and are wholly unprepared for the surprise attack involving a large bear. They trespass on his farm house and lay down dangerous traps for his capture, but the small team is caught off-guard when the real criminal shows up from the darkness of the woods to take them out. He convinces his son and other officers the fox intended to murder him, and so, a more serious chase is initiated. While Copper turns around, his father catches up with Tod with the intention shoot him down, until a passing train just about scrapes him and leaves him with a limp. Nevertheless, his old friend manages to play onto his emotions and is given the benefit of the doubt. When he finds Tod near a crime scene, he believes he's the perpetrator based on mediocre witness testimony. Years into the future, Copper has joined the police, but his father's racist teachings made him grow up to profile foxes as well.
